Saint Joseph's Lake Michigan Famous Frozen Pier and Lighthouse

Saint Joseph North Pierhead Lighthouse

With a rich history spanning nearly 200 years, the beautiful lakefront town of Saint Joseph, Michigan is a place like no other. You'll find an incredible variety of historic businesses, parks and homes in Saint Joseph, along with a beautiful stretch of the Lake Michigan shoreline that includes one of the Great Lakes' most iconic lighthouses.

A Storied Past

At the mouth of the Saint Joseph River, the town of Saint Joseph was a key shipping port from the beginning, with a location directly across Lake Michigan from Chicago. Saint Joseph's first lighthouse was built in 1832—it was one of the first lighthouses on Lake Michigan—and guided ships through the lake's harsh storms for many years.

Saint Joseph was one of the most important ports on Lake Michigan for decades, although the town would eventually go through hard times due to the advancement of railroads and the financial woes of the great depression. And while transportation and manufacturing continue to be important to Saint Joseph, today the town's economy is bolstered by tourism and recreation.

The beaches and waters of Saint Joseph are great for swimming, boating, fishing and sightseeing and the town's thriving downtown is rich in arts and culture, not to mention countless great options for shopping and dining. Of course, many visitors come only to see the town's famous lighthouse.

Light Through the Storm

Just a few years after the first lighthouse was built in Saint Joseph, a new one was constructed at the end of a wooden pier extending out into the lake. Eventually outfitted with a Fresnel lens a supplemented by an additional pier light, the Saint Joseph North Pier Lighthouse has guided countless ships to safety, and it still operates today.

It is one of the few remaining pier range light systems still in use on the Great Lakes, but the pier and lighthouse in Saint Joseph are famous for another reason. Every winter, the blowing wind and waves of Lake Michigan combine with frigid water temperatures to transform the lighthouse into a glimmering work of art.

As the waves crash and freeze upon the pier, they solidify into crystalline ice sculptures, leaving the lighthouse encased in a beautiful layer of ice that looks to be straight out of a fairy tale. Photos of the lighthouse went viral last winter, bringing widespread attention to a phenomenon that locals have known about for ages.
